The Abundant Life Bible Church held a special baptismal service yesterday. If you were here with us, you might have noted that this service wasn’t quite like what you’re used to.
Since it was an outdoor service it was sunny and warm (low 80s) which was much better than the overcast and low 60s we had last Sunday. The swimming place was actually a large holding tank for irrigation water. However, it was coming in straight from the local thermal aquifer and was very clean and warm.
The photos don’t capture the scene around us but we were surrounded by corn and alfalfa fields, on three sides and a cattle pen on the other. A dusty road ran along side of the place. White moths fluttered all around by the hundreds and an assortment of other insects and bugs made the rounds as well. The caretaker of the property had an assortment of five or six dogs…all but one of which appeared to be strays. They made their way through the congregation throughout the service. And no, you wouldn’t have wanted to pet them and I noticed that not even the children were tempted to pet them!
We met under the shade of a few trees and sang hymns and there were a few Scripture readings. They even remembered to take up the offering which usually gets forgotten during special services like this one. Afterward we enjoyed a meal together and Cameron and Dayton joined many others who swam for a couple hours.
There were 11 who were baptized from the church and it was a joy to see their faces smiling beaming. There is joy in following Jesus.
Here’s a riddle for you. If there were 11 baptized from the church but there were 13 baptized in all, where did the other 2 come from? Answer tomorrow…and it’s a doozie!
